Depression usually occurs when there is a chemical imbalance in the brain. The imbalance occurs with serotonin - an important neurotransmitter, which helps to transfer messages throughout the structures of the brain’s nerve cells. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that controls how we feel - happy or sad. If the levels of serotonin are awry, depression can result. Anti-depressants work by regulating the amount of serotonin, to keep the brain functioning properly and keep depression at bay. Keeping your sugar levels consistent, by eating wholesome, healthy foods, with a little, low fat, good quality protein at each meal, will really go a long way to ensuring your depression is not exacerbated. Always eat breakfast - have some cereal, milk and fruit, or eggs and fruit. Try to make sure you eat some healthy snacks in between your main meals (good snacks are some crispbread with some hommous or some low fat cheese and tomatoes or some nuts and fresh fruit). Routine Get a regular routine going - try to do the same things at the same time - this will help you by ensuring your life is stable and consistent. By Matt Shuebrook All my life I have been chubby, although I dont eat much and am active. Everything always checked out OK medically. Before Xmas I tried an experiment. No sweets, white bread or potatoes. Semi low carb. I substituted those with more meat and fruit and veggies. I ate as many calories as before if not more. I have lost 5 pounds and its still coming off! What the heck is going on? Is there a name for what I have-sugar or carb intolerance-insulin resistance? I hear this same story every single year. My answer is has been and will proberly continue to be: Many, many, many people discover that if you cut away refined sugars, processed foods, bad carbs, etc that you will lose weight. That is how the Atkins or South Beach diet got so much hype. The truth is that you will most likely continue to lose weight, until your body says enough is enough “I want my carbs back”. Once you reach this stage its too late. You will be fighting against your body. Your body is going to try in its best efforts to pack back on the pounds that you recently lost. In fact, your body is so bold faced, it will even add a few extra pounds just to show that its in charge. However, not because what I am telling you about these types of diets makes all of them wrong. Some diets work for some people, if they didn’t then they would not be selling like hot-cakes. You need to take proper measurements to see weather or not you are losing lean body mass (lean sexy muscle) or if you are losing body fat (ugly non-sexy fat). In order to do this you will want to contact a health professional in your area and have your body fat tested at least once per six weeks. My best advice to you would be, as long as you keep seeing results (keeping in mind that the results is nothing more than fat coming off) then you should keep doing what you have been doing. But the rest of us, drinking can fast become a diet-breaking addition to the bulge. The problem with the alcoholic beverages is threefold: First, alcohol packs on and nearly doubles the calorie content of any type of juice, soda, or mixer. The average one ounce shot of hard liquor contains about 70-75 calories with some darker liquors like bourbon and brandy a little higher. Add one shot of liquor to a few ounces of tonic or cola and the calorie count is in the hundreds. And those exotic pina coladas or margaritas can run even higher than that. By any measure, one drink wont ruin any diet, yet one drink is rarely a common occurrence. Second, a drink usually leads to two. The taste of one drink is cool and satisfying. The second is even better, and so it goes. Rarely in any social setting where alcohol is being consumed, does on e stick to a single cocktail. Alcohol lessens our inhibitions, which sometimes leads to more alcohol and thusly, more calories. And after yet even one more drink almost always ends in the worst case scenario.
