What Worms Tell You About Your Soil

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

By Paul Downing When you see worms in soil you can be sure that the quality of the soil is excellent. It will be rich in organic matter and valuable nutrients. It will be well aired with good drainage. Where there is an abundance of worms in the soil plants will be healthy and sturdy, flowers will be more colourful and plentiful and fruit and vegetables will taste better and be more nutritious. The question that is sometimes asked is this - is this good soil the result of the worm population or are the worms there because the soil is good quality? There is no clear answer to this because the two are so inter-dependent; they are like the chicken and the egg dilemma. One is not possible without the other. In soil where worms are absent you may have assumed that the soil is poorly drained and lacking in organic matter. You may also have assumed that the nutrient content was poor. These assumptions are probably right but the other possibility of course is that the soil is of good quality but the worms have been removed or destroyed by the New Zealand Flat Worm. This worm thrives in the climate of the British Isles and has done untold damage to the native earthworm population here. The Flat Worm has not posed the same threat in its native country because it cannot tolerate a hot climate and exists there only in shaded and damp areas around trees and bushes. Unfortunately no such restrictions apply here and the flat worm has been free to move and breed at considerable speed. Talking to local farmers they have told me how the sea gulls used to follow the plough for the rich picking of earthworms. But the sea gulls do not do this any more because the worms are not in the ground. Whatever the reason for a lack of worms in your soil adding worms will bring benefits. The benefits will be increased where organic matter such as compost or manure is added. The worms can be placed in the soil about three quarters of a spade in depth with some worm bedding. For more details on adding worms to your soil you can read the article “Worms - Fertilise your soil the natural way with burrowing earthworms!” on our site. Another excellent feed is worm cast it is excellent for breaking up heavy clay soil and aerating the ground. You will notice when you added worm cast to your ground that after a while it sinks down a couple of inches as it makes it way down into the earth. Worm cast is also excellent mulch. It will help keep weeds down and it gives the flower beds a fresh well groomed appearance. Leansmount Worms grow and supply worms for soil improvement and worms for composting. Our fishing worms are large and healthy. Fishing The Henry’s Fork….Bob’s Secret Hole…

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By A.J. Klott Meanwhile back at the Yurt… Having been humbled by “Hank’s” famous trout, it was time for a little change of scenery. My little girl, and kids in general, don’t seem to understand catch and release. Granted, I really hadn’t caught anything to release,(except that seven.. err.. “FIFTEEN INCHER”) it was still hard to return to the yurt and explain my lack of fishing success. She would greet me with her big “daddy can do no wrong” eyes, and expect me to tell her of the “whopper” that got away.Especially since she is used to fishing success, since most of her fish are caught in Grandpa’s Pond, where it is basically a “live well” ready to pull out the catch of the day on a moments notice. So, when daddy comes home with no fish or no fish story, you can see the “daddy just dropped a peg” look on her face. BUT-kids being kids, she is ready to go on to the next thing, and that meant a bike ride through the state park to the old Harriman Ranch. We rode the mile or so to the old historical buildings that sit on the grounds of the state park. The ranch was “one” of the summer homes of E.H. Harriman, of Union Pacific Railroad fame, and is operated as a wildlife sanctuary now. The bike ride goes along the Henry’s Fork and while my daughter was chattering away whle pedaling along, I kept glancing to see if any fish were rising. Old habits are hard to break. We got off our bikes and started to explore the buildings. Unfortunately, this being a weekday, they didn’t have many of the buildings open so we couldn’t go inside. One of the groundskeepers saw us peering through the windows of the buildings and wandered over on his riding lawn mower. He shut off the engine and gave us the rundown on the buildings and told us a little background on the ranch. He mentioned that if we were still there on Friday, they would be opening the buildings and doing some tours. Now, being a groundskeeper in a state park in Last Chance Idaho must not be one of the most high pressured jobs one can be employed in–because “Bob”–was a chatty fellow. You might be wondering how I knew his name was Bob?–Well, I of course read it on his name badge! A.J. Klott–private eye!!! Anyway, “Bob”, was filled with questions. Where were we from? How long were we staying? What were my views on existentialism? O.K.– the last one he didn’t ask–but if he did- I wouldn’t have been surprised, because a guy can do a lot of thinking on the back of a riding mower. But I digress once more. So, the conversation eventually turned to fishing the Henry’s Fork. I of course asked how the fishing was on the ranch here, and “Bob” proceeded to tell me that he did most of his fishing above the reservoir in the “anything goes-six fish limit section”. He then did something that you would expect from a guy on the back of a riding mower in Last Chance Idaho. He offered up his “SECRET FISHING HOLE”. Maybe it was the look of undernourishment my daughter had, or maybe he just thought I was a “friendly sort”– but nonetheless– “Bob” was ready to unlock the key to Henry’s Fork. He told me he didn’t usually do this, but he just thought that I looked like a guy that would appreciate his “Secret Spot”. AND if you think I am going to breach “Bobs” trust by telling you where this spot is, well you are wrong!! What I will tell you is “Bob” went to great lengths to hand draw me a personal map–kind of like a Henry’s Fork treasure map– right on my brochure to the ranch grounds. He also gave me detailed instructions–like: “turn left at the Phillips 66, drive down to @#%$^* road, make a right and go EXACTLY 3.3 miles, make another right, drive down as far as you can go, hike on down to the river, walk downstream to the BIG ROCK, toss your worm or lure or fly behind that rock and I will guarantee you will catch a fish!!” A guarantee! I didn’t even get that from any of the fly shops!! “Bob” was pretty sure of himself, and I looked his map over carefully and contemplated eating the brochure, just to make sure that only “Bob” and I would be the two individuals in the lower 48 that held the whereabouts of the “Secret Spot”. I asked if “Bob” needed a blood oath or if he had noticed any of Ashcroft’s men in the area– because I didn’t even want the government to know about this spot. None of this seemed to worry “Bob” and I don’t really like the taste of 20# bond–so I stuck the brochure in my back pocket, and told “Bob” I would try the secret spot that evening and bring him a full report by weeks end.I also told him not to worry about “divulgeing” the whereabouts of the “Secret Spot”, because this was my first time to fish the Henry’s Fork, and I wasn’t about to go back and “squeal like a canary” back in Southern Oregon. Luckily, my daughter was busy chasing butterflies while all this was going on, or I would have had to send her to one of those “brainwashing” places so she would have no recollection of the “Secret Spot”. “Bob” also told us about the springs where the Henry’s Fork originates and that it was a nice place to visit and see big fish and an old cabin right where the water boils out of the ground. That was public knowledge. Before long we were off to the springs and I was planning my evenings fishing…at “Bob’s Secret Hole”. The afternoon was pleasant and the springs were enjoyable, but I was really getting excited to go fishing. Of course, seeing the 25 inch rainbows lying beneath the gin clear waters at the springs, didn’t help to quell my excitement. By 7:30 I could not wait any longer. I pulled my personal map out and headed for the “Secret Spot”. I followed the map to the “T” and made sure nobody was tailing me. You can’t be to careful with “Secret Spots”. When I went exactly 3.3 miles from the turn–there it was– the dirt road that turned towards the river. I had my wife and daughter with me, and fought off the urge to blindfold them, figuring that after twenty-six years of marriage and having the “fruit of my loins” in the back seat, if I couldn’t trust them–who could I trust? Anticipation was great. I saw the end of the dirt road coming and the little parking area “Bob” had described.I pulled to a stop and………….. …………saw three other cars in the “Secret Spot”!! “This can’t be.” I said. “This is ‘Bobs Secret Hole’,–maybe “Bob” is here?” I got my waders on quickly and headed down the trail to the river. Everything was exactly as “Bob” had described it so I knew I was in the right spot. When I got to the river, it looked great–definitely a “fishy looking place”. I walked on down to the trail and saw the BIG ROCK– and behind it…. three other fishermen!! Of which, none were “Bob”. In “Bob’s Secret Hole”. OR should I say “NOT SO SECRET HOLE!!” I looked back upstream and saw four more fishermen in other spots. Counting me, that made eight people in this “Secret Spot”, and before I could even wet a line another two showed up. That totals ten, for those of you keeping track on your “Secret Spot” tote board!! I fished up and down and for two hours and never touched a fish–even behind the BIG ROCK–and I never saw anybody else touch a fish either! That includes the guys using bait and lures.I even waited until I was the last guy on the river–but to no avail. What happens when you get a guarantee from a groundskeeper named “Bob” and it doesn’t come through?? Well, you do what I do. Pack up and head for Montana!! But not before using that map to “Bob’s Secret Hole” to start the evenings fire!! In hindsight, I learned alot about the Henry’s Fork. It is a beautiful place to fish, as tough a place to catch a fish on a fly as advertised, that bringing hamburger meat is a necessity, and that I fully expect to go back and fish it again. Maybe this fall.I also learned that guys on the back of riding lawnmowers don’t typically get paid to guide you to the big fish, and even though I am sure “Bob” catches some fish there, I think when I go back…. I’ll just let “Bob” have that “Secret Spot” to himself. He and the other nine fishermen…. A.J. Online Dating Tips-I See Someone I Like-Now What?

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By Jennifer L. Hunt HTML Source EditorWord wrap So, youve signed up to a couple of dating sites and have actually found a few people youd like to get to know better maybe even date. What do you do now? Well, you can put up your profile and wait for someone to contact you, but youll probably get much better results if you take the initiative. When you find someone interesting and feel the urge to say “Hey”, dont be bashful! That person may just love to hear from you. After all, they created a profile, just like you, in hopes of meeting someone. You definitely wont know unless you contact them and find out. Ladies, dont be shy - men love to be pursued! How do you initiate contact? The most common ways to contact someone is with an email, an instant message, or a wink. I recommend saving the instant messaging until youve exchanged a few emails because it gives you more time to think about what you are going to say and to get a feel for the other person. Once you get more familiar with each other, then you can start chatting. If you dont have a paid membership, youll most likely be limited to using winks or smiles or something similar. These are canned messages that will say something like “Nancy is interested in you” or “Joe winked at you”. Winks and smiles are a quick way to say hello but drastically limit your ability to pique someones interest. This puts a lot of pressure on having a terrific profile because it will have to do all of your talking for you. Email is best in the beginning. Emailing a potential date is a lot like flirting. The purpose of the first email is to get them to respond, to open a dialogue. You want to get their interest but leave it open ended so that they will respond back to you. Keep your emails short and charming. Another tip: dont send a barrage of emails to one person, follow their pace and try to keep up. (If they send 4 a week, you send 4 or so a week.) So How Do You Write That First Email? When replying to personal ads, try to be, well, personable. Write at least a paragraph or two about yourself and what you like about them or their personal ad. Many of the principles of profile writing apply to email, such as staying positive, being honest, and paying close attention to spelling and grammar. Meeting someone online is very exciting and can make you feel like a love struck teenager, but do your best not to sound like one. Most of us are looking for someone that is a little more mature, someone that has potential for being a lifetime partner. When you first start communicating with a person, there is nothing wrong with flirtation, being happy, and laughing, but make sure its not over the top. Also, dont start by pouring out your soul, telling him or her all about your ex-spouse or ex-significant other. Avoid talking about personal things such as financial problems, health issues, or stories about your dysfunctional family. This is a huge turnoff, and an excellent way to scare someone away. Save that kind of talk for your Thursday night poker game or day at the hairdresser. If you are a single parent, a little bit of conversation about your kids is fine to break the ice and find common ground, but remember you are trying to build a romantic connection, so keep it too a minimum. Always be honest! If the relationship moves forward, the truth will come out eventually. Its far better to be yourself up front rather than tell a silly lie in the beginning, only to be found out and have a potential relationship fall apart. Keep it positive! The last thing anyone wants is to send a message to someone and in the response, hear all about their past failed relationships, health problems, or financial woes. You can share the doom and gloom after you get to know each other a little bit. Or better yet, just put all that stuff behind you and move on. Theres no time like the present to start fresh! Compliment something you found interesting in their profile. This is where its important to read the persons profile. It gives you things to talk about. For example, if you are a woman and you find a man interesting and he has Labrador dogs just like you, you could say something like, “Hi. My name is Mary and I noticed in your profile that you have Labs. I do too!” From there, give a brief description of your dog, mention that you would enjoy hearing back, and sign off. Avoid overtly sexual comments. Dont come on too strong at first with sexual innuendos and try not to comment on the persons photo. Find something a little more deep to comment on, maybe something they said in their description. Find a way to continue the communication. The main point of the first email is to get them to notice you and to respond back to you. Dont give up too much information, but tell them enough to get them interested. You are trying to get a conversation going, so asking questions is a good idea, as long as you dont ask too many. Mention things you have in common, and ask a question or two about them. For example, when you first start messaging with someone, you could ask, “Did you do anything fun this week?” “Do you have any great plans for the weekend?” This will help you learn more about the person without seeming nosey. After you have been communicating with someone special for a while, you can use innocent questions to see if you can find an opening in time when the two of you might meet. Try to avoid long letters with little details that might be considered boring. Keep it to the point, but try to let your personality shine through. Then, a good rule of thumb is “compliments and questions.” An earnest compliment on the persons accomplishments, writing style, or life goals will say a lot. Here are a couple of good, ice-breaking starter topics: If you live in the same area, comment on the area, or something relating to it. If you dont live in the same area, you can ask questions about where they are. Music and movies are also a good conversation-starter; most everyone likes some kind of music or movie. Maybe you went to the same college or better yet, a rival school. Poking fun at rival schools is always a fun way to break the ice. And sign your real first name If you work this right, the person will contact you back. Remember, even if you get a response, youll have to keep their interest. In the emails that follow, keep asking questions and keep complimenting (while remaining honest and positive). When you feel comfortable, you can move on to more intimate forms of communication like instant messaging, the telephone, and eventually, meeting in person. If a day goes by and you havent heard from them, rather than inundate the individuals mailbox with messages, leave one short, sweet message that provides a small hint to prompt him or her to reply. Remember Dont give out your full name, personal email address, or phone number in this initial email; wait until youre both interested and its apparent that its going somewhere. Wait. Tips To Choosing The Right Button Badges

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

By Praveen Samra Button badges are arguably one of the most classic promotional items. Events as diverse as concerts, hen nights, political campaigns and charity fund raising have all seen the benefits of using button badges as small merchandise items. Funky and with an enduring appeal, button badges can be manufactured in a choice of shapes and in a range of different sizes, enabling companies to be as creative as they want. Small quantities are unusually economic, whilst very large runs can also be produced within the tightest of budgets. The humble tin button badges has timeless appeal - collectible, trendy and extremely economical. The growth in demand for these items continues with avid collectors always on the look out for new badges to add to their collections. As with any promotional products, a few key points should be taken into account when deciding on the right button badge for a campaign. First, establish the budget and timings. Also check if there are any extras not included in the quotation, like artwork, origination and delivery costs. Identify the marketing objective and consider the brand image. Although button badges are primarily used as promotional giveaways to raise awareness, remember that a quality brand can easily be devalued by poor quality products. Understand the target market as this will help in deciding which design will have the best impact on them. Finally, be innovative and creative. In order to stand out from the crowd in a competitive market, button badges need to be original and eye-catching in every way. *recommended suppliers for button badges, Rocket Badges the largest suppliers of button badges in the uk Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Praveen_Samra http://EzineArticles.com/?Tips-To-Choosing-The-Right-Button-Badges&id=550314 instant personal loans guaranteed calculate taxes from paycheck best personal loan rates money lenders for medical offfices
